My head is burning and my body is icy cold. I notice a shovel lying next to me and, above me, something like a wooden cross. I look closer, my eyes find it hard to focus. Slowly, like waiting for muddy water to clear, I see it. A blue and yellow sign, reading ‘Packards - TO LET’.

With Atlantis as a readymade backdrop, you did a great job of flling in the character in the foreground.

An interestingly different setting; gave it a little spark. Interestingly I've recently been told by 2 different people that you shouldn't start a story with dialogue. I'm not really one to follow such rules and this is one of several that I've read recently that also ignore it. I can't see the point of the 'rule' myself.

Thanks Neil,

It is not for a lack of desire to write that I have been dark for a bit. I have just been super busy. This story took a month to get out of me.

I should be a bit more involved after the China trip.

All good ideas. I like the Shock and Awe idea, but I'm not sure that would exactly work. I think, faced with a threat like that we could combine our technologies and prevent a catastrophe.

I was thinking about softening up the planet and surrounding solar system colonies with gamma ray lasers built on top of essentially a massive capacitor.

You could make them small, unmanned and cheap. Place them outside of the confines of the solar system and take potshots at your victims for an extended period of time.

The fire rate would be suuuper slow, but who cares.

Once they've done the work of reducing defenses to nil, bring in the invasion forces. You always have the ability to use them again.

To avoid a lengthy and costly occupation, you need to get the humans on side. Use an overwhelming display of force - slam a comet into Mars at relativistic speed, for example - then announce you're willing to discuss terms. Let the humans police themselves.
